From Trial Attorney to Sports Agent, Building an Agency, Transitioning Student Athletes to Pro Athletes and Negotiating Contracts for Professional Basketball Players with Duncan Lloyd
Duncan Lloyd is a sports agent with Overtime Sports based out of Philadelphia, PA whose firm specializes in representing professional basketball players in the NBA and abroad. We learn about Duncan’s transition from trial lawyer to sports agent and how he has successfully built a sports agency. Duncan likes to say he is now a sports agent who is a recovering trial attorney. Duncan manages client recruitment and business development for Overtime Sports and uses his network of coaches and executives in the NBA and around the world to find the right professional homes for his clients. Duncan talks about the process, transition, and timing for young men from student-athlete to pro athlete and what he sees as his role in making that happen. We learn the day to day life of a sports agent and how deals get done. We learn his role in how his clients train and get prepared for their professional careers. Of course I had to ask him his opinion on the Freddie Freeman negotiation and if the Braves can expect to sign Dansby Swanson with the same agency involved. I also had to ask him about his thoughts on professional athletes who choose to represent themselves. We discuss contract terms that are important to his clients outside of just year/dollar amount and the importance of understanding his client’s needs and wants. Finally, we talk some specifics about NBA team construction, CBA’s, his understanding of business sides of sports, and his thoughts on college NIL deals.
If you, like me, are always interested in professional athletes signing big deals, the agents role in making that happen and what goes on behind close doors in the process, then this is the podcast episode for you.
